The Transition Year Programme of Athboy Community School aims to provide students with the opportunity to:

  • Discover and develop their own individual talents and strengths.
  • Engage in independent, self-directed learning.
  • Mature and reach their full potential in an atmosphere of mutual respect.

Assessment is on-going throughout the year. Each individual subject teacher will use various forms of assessment (e.g. written, practical, oral, aural and project work). The results of these will be sent to parents in Christmas and end of year reports. Portfolio assessment will be used to determine each student's end of year award, i.e. Certificate of Excellence, Distinction, Merit or Pass. The portfolio will consist of the student's diary and five pieces of his or her chosen work. Each student will be interviewed about his or her portfolio at the end of May. Students are encouraged to develop their skills of self-assessment and reflection through their weekly diary entries.
