Parent/Guardian Update: Semester 3: Week 6-Friday 19 April 2024
2024/04/19 13:35:59

Dear parents & guardians,

It was an extremely busy week for us.

Science & Biology Inspection

Congratulations to the Science & Biology Department following an inspection on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.  We had preliminary feedback yesterday and there were a lot of positives to take, not least that the Subject Dept Plan in particular was very good.  The student focus group was great, the students did us proud apparently. Well done Ms Dowling, Ms di Lucia, Maria, Ms Dunne, Mr McHugh and Ms Farrelly!

Anti-Bullying

The inspector looked for our Anti-bullying Policy this week so it was fortunate that the Student Support Team had begun its work of gathering data on bullying in the school with a view to running an awareness campaign and embedding clear reporting procedures for students.  We have a core team of James McFerran, Cam Ly Steward, Manuella Lunginus and Liam Geraghty and a larger group who act as a focus group.

The team have designed a survey for staff and students to gauge the extent of bullying currently in the school.  More to follow.

School Self Evaluation

The Ethos Team met on Monday and will present findings at our staff meeting next week.

The Teaching and Learning Team have designed a teachers survey and a student survey on the Semester 2 Assessments and we will administering these to 2nd and 5th Years next week.  We would ask parents/guardians of 2nd & 5th Years to access the students' Semester 2 Reports on VS Ware and have students fill in those results on Page 3 of the journal in preparation for doing the survey next week

The Wellbeing Team met this week also and the team are currently upskilling on Restorative Practice with a view to a roll out in Sep 2024.

5th Year Geography Field Trip
2024/04/19 13:24:09

A group of 26 fifth year Geography students from Athboy Community School with teachers Mr. Magner and Mr. Mahon went to Kippure House Estate near Blessington in Co. Wicklow for a river field study on Thursday April 18th.

The purpose of the field trip was to investigate the impact of the processes of transportation and deposition on the formation of a river meander on Athdown Brook, a tributary of the Liffey.

The group had an enjoyable, action-packed day gathering data in the river. With the aid of the park rangers each student measured the river velocity and classed the river flow using Berg’s Classification. Next the students did a River Channel Cross Section to see the effects of deposition and erosion on the shape of the river channel. They recorded the gradient of the river itself and used clinometers to carry out a Valley Profile to see the effect of deposition on the shape of the valley. They also measured the sinuosity of the curve of the river to determine whether or not it could be classed as a meander. The group also did a Bedload Analysis to see the impact of the processes of attrition, saltation and traction on the material being carried and deposited by the river.

The Geographers also observed features of erosion and deposition such as a point bar, river bends and meanders, rapids as well as a river cliff. The group also did field sketches to take note of the features, conditions and processes evident.

The students will now work on producing a report on the field trip which is worth 20% of their Leaving Certificate Geography examination.

Senior Cycle Business Students Visit
2024/04/17 16:00:51

5th and 6th year students had a very interesting visit to The European Commission Representation in Ireland recently. We were treated to a very informative presentation about the EU with topics chosen in advance to specifically cater for some of the LC Business Course. Students had an opportunity to ask questions and were encouraged to give their opinions on matters such as CAP, the Directives currently affecting Ireland and the topic of Energy was high on the Agenda.

Students were given information regarding the various career opportunities that exist for Irish students in the European Headquarters in Brussels and opportunities for work experience at the other Representative Offices around Europe.

A quiz followed for which we were certainly prepared. Nicola was extremely impressed by the knowledge displayed by our Business students.

The European Commission Representation in Ireland serves as the Commission’s voice in Ireland, aiming to communicate EU affairs at both national and local level. It’s mission is to engage with Irish citizens, institutions, and stakeholders, providing information about EU policies, initiatives, and programs.

It informs citizens about European elections, such as the upcoming elections on 7th May 2024.

Parent/Guardian Update: Semester 3: Week 5: Friday 12 April 2024
2024/04/12 13:49:43

Dear parents and guardians,

It's been a busy week back at the ranch following the Easter Break.  The countdown is on now to Summer exams, six weeks to house exams in fact!

School Self Evaluation

All schools engage in a process of School Self Evaluation in which we set out our vision and how we intend to achieve the targets we set out for ourselves.

To date we have eight School Self Evaluation Teams in the school and teachers volunteer to be a member of one of those teams.

They are;

1. Positive Behaviour Team

2. Ethics Team

3. Digital Learning Team

4. TY/LCA Team

5. Teaching and Learning Team

6. Wellbeing Team

7. Aesthetics Team

8. Health and Safety Team

Every team meets 5-8 times per year and ensures that a particular initiative or improvement in a specific area is implemented.  This can lead to the creation of policies and procedures which we then bring to the Board of Management to ratify.

The teams currently in session are doing the following work;

Teaching and Learning Team

The Teaching and Learning Team met today for their first meeting and we have drafted a Teacher Survey  in relation to the Semester 2 Assessments in February.  The decision to move away from written house exams to a continuous assessment approach was implemented in order to reduce stress on students and to allow students to be assessed in a different way which may showcase their strengths more effectively.  We will also be surveying students as to whether they preferred this approach.

Wellbeing Team

Led by our Chaplain, Deirdre Halligan, Year Head Maggie McGrory and teacher Katie Monahan, this team is working towards implementing a Restorative Practice Approach to relationships in the school and the Board of Management has allocated funding to work with a company called Connect RP (See the following link: Connectrp Website).

In their words,

"The principles that underpin this philosophy aim to build positive relationships, create caring cultures and cultivate connected communities where we feel seen, where we can flourish and where we co-create relational learning communities. that underpin this philosophy aim to build positive relationships, create caring cultures and cultivate connected communities where we feel seen, where we can flourish and where we co-create relational learning communities".

We will be creating a Student RP Team to provide feedback on how we approach the rollout of this programme in September.  Meanwhile a team of ten teachers will be learning about Restorative Practice and will roll it out to staff in May with an Induction.

Student Support Team

The first meeting of this student team was this morning and the focus is our Anti-Bullying Policy, in particular Racial Bullying.  Students will draw up a survey next week for students to do in order to assess the scope of the issue and to come up with a plan to address it.

Calendar

Please check the school calendar on the app and website for dates in May of school trips, graduations, practical state exams, house exams etc.. as  May is always a busy month.
